Nice book

The Jungle
by Upton Sinclair

View in Library Catalog

Created in 1906 to expose the various horrors of the Chicago meatpacking industry as well as the multi-faceted atrocities faced by immigrants and working-class people in industrialized cities. This famous muckraking novel was so shocking that it was a deciding factor in the passage of the Pure Food and Drug Act and the Meat Inspection Act. The story follows a Lithuanian immigrant named Jurgis Rudkus, as well as his family and friends, as they struggle to stay afloat amid the dangers in Chicago's Packingtown. This book isn't for the faint of heart but is a good read that will have you thinking and will spur many questions about the era.

This biography of Henrietta lacks shines some light on the woman whose immortal cells transformed medicine. Her life and person is widely unknown and unrecognized and her family does not receive any of the profit made off of her cells. This book talks about ethics and racism in the world of medicine, a serious but undiscussed topic.

The Giver
by Lois Lowry

The Giver is a masterpiece of a book that has a strong storyline and a good lead character as well. This book combines suspense and and detail, and the protagonist also develops extremely well. This award winning novel has romance, thrill, and has memorable likable characters. I think this book is quite satisfying and i would recommend it.

The Great Gatsby
by Scott Fitzgerald

This was such a difficult read, I couldn't read it. I found it funny, but sometimes I'm afraid the parts I found funny weren't supposed to be. I also hated Daisy; she was such a frivolous character and I didn't understand what was the whole fuss about her. But Gatsby...he interested me, and I connected with him in many places throughout the book.

I was very interested in this book and enjoyed reading it. Although I found this book predictable.

Candymakers
by Wendy Mass

The Candymakers is a mighty fine book. It has many twists and turns and the way it is structured represents that there are always two sides (or in this case 4 sides) of a story.
